The initial appeal of “Wow Thing,” the fourth single from SM Station’s fruitful “x 0” project, was obvious: hooks and looks. It delivers on both.
The track, composed by a grip of K-pop regulars including Dsign Music’s Anne Judith Stokke Wik and Karen Poole, is a summery confection of piano-led boom-bap accented with funk guitar and organ. It leaves plenty of space for the girls to run rampant over a nearly track-long chorus that only breaks for (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon to spit 16 bars. It’s not even three minutes; it’s in and out before you can get tired of it.
The MV is light on concept, instead focused on distinctive, sharp choreo and a slew of outfits. Soyeon’s mint-green jacket in the first chorus and SinB’s off-shoulder crop paired with red track pants and knee-high boots are particularly good fits. Please also pay attention to Chungha’s extraordinarily powerful look in the final stretch, which with its big, ruffled top and spicy wrap skirt may take the cake. I think that’s the one.
The whole thing has a lightly nostalgic haze to it, shot through diffuse, overblown lighting and painted in pale pastels. The girls are chilling at a diner; then they go to the pool. We’re all just hanging out, but only some of us look like supermodels.
